The tool reads PNG, JPG, and WebP – the three formats that the top ten keying tools we audited all explicitly list. The browser handles the decode; nothing is sent to a server. Output is always transparent PNG or WebP with alpha; JPEG is deliberately not offered because the format has no alpha channel.
The limit is the browser's maximum canvas size, not a number we picked. On this machine's Chrome we measured it at the browser's maximum canvas. As a rule of thumb: stay under 25 MB per file. Above that the browser tab may run out of memory.
Tolerance sets how far a pixel can sit from the key color and still be treated as background. Raise it if patches of the screen survive, lower it if part of the subject disappears.
Edge is signed. Negative values pull the cutout inward (use −2 to −5 to kill a thin green halo around hair). Positive values soften a hard jagged outline.
Spill removal pulls the cast of the key color out of the subject itself – the green tint that bounces onto skin and light clothing.
You load one image, you key it, you download it. There is no queue, no batch button, no account, and no history. The trade-off is that nothing about your photo leaves the page: drop the file, get the result, close the tab.
What does "chroma key" mean here?
It's the same thing as a green screen or blue screen – removing a background based on its color. Pick a key color (default green), set how strictly to match it, and pull it out.
Can I use it on a blue screen?
Yes. Click the Blue preset or use the eyedropper on the background. The algorithm is color-agnostic; it keys whatever color you point it at.
Does it work on white or black backgrounds?
Yes. Set the key color to white or black with the color picker. The keyer falls back to a luminance comparison when the key color has little saturation, which is the only way to tell a white wall from a white shirt.
How do I get a transparent PNG?
Click Download PNG. The PNG keeps the alpha channel losslessly, which is what every editor, slide deck, and web page expects for a transparent image.
How do I get a WebP with alpha?
Click Download WebP (alpha). WebP with alpha is roughly 30% smaller than the equivalent PNG for photographic subjects. If your browser does not support encoding WebP, the button is hidden and the PNG path is used instead.
What does the "Show alpha matte" button do?
It replaces the result with a grayscale view of the keyer's mask: black where the keyer is certain it is background, white where it is certain it is subject, gray in the transition. Use it to spot fringe that survived your edge and spill settings.
Does it work on video?
No. This page handles a single image. Video chroma key needs frame-by-frame processing with temporal stability, which is a different tool.
Is my photo uploaded anywhere?
No. The decode, the math, and the export all happen inside the page via the Canvas API. You can confirm this in your browser's developer tools (Network tab) – there are zero outbound requests after the page itself loads.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes. The interface is responsive. On iOS or Android you can drop a screenshot, pick from the gallery, or paste from the clipboard.
