Lighting a green screen is the single most important step in getting a clean chroma key. The screen itself is cheap — a roll of fabric, a painted wall, or even a dollar-store tablecloth will work. What separates a usable key from a nightmare is how evenly you light that surface. This guide walks through the entire process: choosing a material, positioning it, lighting it, separating your subject, and avoiding the mistakes that make keying painful.
The Material: What Makes a Good Green Screen
The ideal green screen material is very green, matte, and wrinkle-free. Bright, saturated green fabric produces the best results — a lighter green will work less reliably. One practitioner reported buying very green cotton fabric from Walmart for about $9 for three yards, and noted that lighter green materials failed outright. Others have used white bed sheets painted with basic green paint, which stiffens into a starched texture that hangs flat against a wall. Dollar-store green tablecloths also work, especially if you stack them for opacity.
The enemy of any green screen material is wrinkles. Large wrinkles create shadows that read as a different shade of green, which the keyer will not remove. If you use fabric, hem the edges so they don't unravel, and stretch it taut. If you use paint, apply it to a smooth, flat surface. Some people stretch green polyurethane film on a metal rod frame — the point is to get a smooth, flat, evenly colored surface.
Positioning: Get Your Subject Away from the Screen
Before you set up a single light, get your subject as far from the green screen as possible. This is the most repeated piece of advice across every experienced practitioner, and for good reason: distance solves two problems at once. First, it prevents the subject's shadow from falling on the screen, which creates dark patches that are difficult to key. Second, it reduces spill — the green light reflecting off the screen onto your subject's hair, skin, and clothing.
Eight to ten feet of separation between the green screen and the subject is the minimum recommended distance for product and portrait work, especially when shooting reflective objects. For video work with people, the farther you can get them from the screen, the better. If space is tight, you can compensate somewhat with lighting, but distance is always the first and most effective fix.
Lighting the Screen: Even, Not Necessarily Bright
The goal of lighting the green screen is not brightness — it is evenness. Every part of the screen should be the same shade of green. If one side is a stop brighter than the other, the keyer sees two different greens and removes one but not the other. The result is green patches in your final composite.
The recommended target for screen brightness is about 70 IRE on a waveform monitor — a flat, thin line that indicates every part of the screen is the same brightness. However, some practitioners cite a lower target of 40–50 IRE, which places the background roughly one stop below the subject's exposure. The key principle is consistency: whatever brightness you choose, it must be uniform across the entire screen.
In practice, you achieve even lighting with two lights placed on either side of the screen, angled inward and slightly downward. Diffusion helps — sheer fabric in front of a desk lamp, soft boxes, or umbrellas all spread the light to eliminate hot spots. You want the light to be omnidirectional enough that there are no dark shadows anywhere on the screen.
Here is a common disagreement: do you need to light the screen precisely, or will "good enough" work? One camp insists on waveform-monitored, perfectly flat 70 IRE lighting. Another camp points out that even abysmal museum lighting produced a workable real-time key. The truth is somewhere in between: video is more forgiving than photography because lower resolutions hide imperfections, but underexposure is always the biggest enemy. An underexposed green screen produces visible spill that is difficult to fix in post.
Lighting the Subject: Match Color Temperature, Add a Magenta Hairlight
Once the screen is lit, light your subject separately. The subject's lighting should use the same color temperature as the screen lights — mixing daylight and tungsten will create color fringing at the edges that is difficult to key. The subject should be lit adequately and independently of the screen, so that adjustments to one do not affect the other.
One trick that experienced keyers recommend: add a hairlight (a light from behind, hitting the subject's hair and shoulders) gelled with 1/4 magenta. The magenta counteracts the green spill that inevitably bounces off the screen onto the subject's edges, reducing the green fringe that makes keying difficult. This is not a substitute for distance and spill control — it is a supplement.
Common Lighting Problems and Fixes
Harsh shadows from the subject. If the subject's feet, hands, or body cast shadows on the screen, those dark patches are nearly impossible to key. The fix is distance and side lighting — lights from above and the sides, independent of the subject's key light, so the subject does not cast forward shadows onto the screen.
Noise in dark areas. When parts of the scene are underexposed — for example, the dark area behind a subject's legs under a table — the camera produces noise, and the keyer struggles to distinguish green from noise. This is especially bad with H.264 and CMOS sensors, which perform poorly in shadow. The fix is more light on the dark areas, or a flatter overall exposure.
Green reflection on reflective objects. Reflective surfaces — cars, leather, chrome, glossy product packaging — pick up green from the screen. A polarizer helps reduce the reflection, but given the angles and curves of many objects, it will not remove it entirely. For extreme cases, you can use a garbage matte to mask out the reflective area, or place matte black material over reflective surfaces that are not part of the shot.
Spill on hair and skin. Green spill is most visible on blonde hair, which naturally reflects more green light. If you cannot increase distance, reduce the brightness of the screen lights (keeping them even), and use a magenta hairlight. In post, you can use color curves or hue/saturation adjustments to reduce green in the affected areas — but this is always harder than preventing the spill in the first place.
Do You Actually Need to Light the Screen?
A common beginner question: if the screen is just going to be removed, does lighting it even matter? The answer is yes — but the degree of precision depends on your use case. For video at lower resolutions, even ambient room light may work if it is reasonably even. One person reported using the spill from their main light alone, with no dedicated screen lights, and getting acceptable results. But for photography, or any work requiring clean edges, the screen must be lit carefully. Underexposure is the real danger: a dark green screen produces spill that is nearly impossible to remove.
