Pick green, unless something in your shot is green. Green is the brighter of the two, it needs less light to reach a keyable exposure, and digital sensors read the green channel with less noise than any other. That combination is why green became the default. Reach for blue when your subject contains green you need to keep, when you're compositing a night or low-key scene, or when you simply cannot get the subject far enough from the backdrop.

Everything below is about making that call, and then living with it on set.

What the keyer is actually doing

A chroma keyer samples one colour and deletes every pixel near it. That is the whole mechanism. It has no idea what a person is. Anything in frame that sits close enough to your key colour gets deleted along with the backdrop. A green shirt becomes a hole in someone's chest, and no amount of slider work brings it back.

This is the single fact that decides blue versus green. Not brightness, not tradition. Whatever colour you are not willing to lose goes on the wall.

The five things that decide it

1. What's in the shot. Green products, foliage, anything mint or olive. Those rule out green. Blue eyes, indigo denim, a blue logo. Those rule out blue. Here is the part that trips people up: on a green screen, blue is actively safe. The two sit on opposite sides of the colour wheel, so a keyer tuned to green has no reason to touch blue. On a blue screen the same logic holds in reverse. So "what am I wearing" is not a vague worry, it is arithmetic.

2. How much light you have. Green is the brighter of the pair. Blue wants roughly double the light to expose cleanly, which matters more than people expect. A blue screen in a room that barely handles a green one will come out underexposed, and an underexposed screen spills badly and keys worse. If your lighting budget is thin, that alone settles it.

3. What the final scene looks like. Blue keys more gently in dark material. Night exteriors, moody interiors, anything where the subject is rim-lit against black. Blue blends, where green tends to leave a luminous halo that reads as fake. Daylight scenes and anything bright go green.

4. How much room you have. Spill is light bouncing off the backdrop onto your subject. Green spills aggressively. Blue far less. If your subject has to sit close to the backdrop because the room is small, blue will forgive you in a way green will not. Distance remains the cheapest fix, but blue is the better backup when you cannot buy distance.

5. Eyes, if you're shooting people. Brown eyes are safe in front of either. Blue eyes in front of a blue screen are a genuine hazard. The keyer can punch out the iris. This is unglamorous and it is real, and it is one reason the choice still gets made per-project rather than by rule.

The setup sequence

  1. Walk the frame for the colour you cannot lose. Before buying anything, list every object and garment that will be on camera. If green appears, buy blue. If blue appears, buy green. If both appear, reshoot the wardrobe or the product. Do not try to key around it.
  2. Check your light against the colour. Budget roughly twice the illumination for blue that you would for green. If the room cannot deliver it, the decision is made for you.
  3. Set the subject-to-backdrop distance. Around 1.5–2 m (roughly 5–6.6 ft) is the working range. Closer than that and spill lands on hair and shoulders. That spill is what later reads as a black or green fringe, not the backdrop itself.
  4. Stop down. Depth of field is the enemy of a clean edge. f/5.6 on an APS-C body, f/9.0 on full frame. A wide-open aperture softens the hair outline into something no keyer can trace.
  5. Raise the shutter past the default. At 30 fps the usual rule gives you 1/60, and 1/60 smears green into a trail behind any movement. Push to 1/125, or 1/200 if there is real motion.
  6. Match colour temperature across every fixture. Get the screen lights and the subject lights to the same 5500 K. Mismatched sources put colour fringing on the edges that survives into the composite.
  7. Capture with the colour information intact. 10-bit, 4:2:2 where your kit allows it. Keying is a colour operation. Throwing away chroma samples before the keyer sees them is self-sabotage.
  8. Light the backdrop separately and evenly. Its brightness should be flat across the whole surface, not bright. Evenness is the goal. Hot spots and shadowed folds read as two different colours.
  9. Add a hair light below the key. Something dimmer than your main, aimed at hair and shoulders, builds the contrast that separates the subject from the wall.
  10. Keep the other colour on hand. This is the habit that saves shoots. Own both. When a guest arrives in the wrong colour, or a product lands late, you swap the backdrop instead of fighting the keyer for an hour.

Worth noting on that green: the two hex values above are not the same colour. #00B140 is the value most Western references quote. #0A9A38 is what gets specified in day-to-day production work, and it is darker and slightly less saturated. If you are matching fabric to an existing screen, match the physical swatch, not the number you read in a spec sheet.

How we got here

Note what did not happen: green did not win because blue stopped working. It won because cameras changed.

If you are…

A livestreamer selling physical products. Buy both, and default to green. The failure mode here is specific and brutal. Anything green or near-green in your product line gets eaten mid-broadcast, and yellow and light-blue items are collateral damage too. When the product is green, switch the backdrop rather than trying to mask it live.

A solo creator in one room. Green, and spend the money you saved on lighting. Your constraint is light and space, and green is cheaper on both.

Shooting narrative or dark material. Blue, if you can light it. The spill behaviour alone is worth the extra fixtures.

Working with unpredictable subjects. Guests, customers, whoever walks in. Keep both backdrops within reach. The wardrobe problem is not predictable, and the swap takes ninety seconds.
